On Wednesday, my afternoon task for my internship was to attend a theatre presentation of little kids performing skits. Since it's the 100 year anniversary of Marie Curie's discovery of radiology, the skits were all "doubles of Marie and Pierre Curie" where the kids dressed up as little French scientists. Here are pictures of some of my favorites:

Today I forgot my camera on a very cool field trip. Our Ecosystems of Chile class is taught by professors that both work for CEA, el Centro de Estudias Agrarias/Ambientales (Center for Agricultural and Environmental Studies). We went to the town of Corral to help out with 2 ecology experiments in the field:

- taking a census of birds of prey in the area

- setting traps for rats around streams to study the concentration of the virus Hanta

I worked with two ecologists from Temuco on the second task. While we set traps for rats in the bushes and trees surrounding Corral, we found a bright orange frog, a lizard, a lot of interesting bugs, and a ranger in full camo. The ranger, armed with a very large knife, was blazing a trail along a series of waterfalls. He was really talkative and thanked us for our work, because the virus Hanta is a serious problem in Corral. The town doesn't have a very good public water system and it is built right on the edge of the bay on steep hillsides. For a place with a sanitation problem, it is really gorgeous on a sunny day...

In other news, Valdivia now has less rain and more flowers. Students continue to protest for educational reform, and there are marches and demonstrations every Thursday afternoon. Many are also attending classes, but they are finishing the first semester, which was supposed to end in July. Second semester is still up in the air, so it is a good thing that special classes were organized for foreign students so that we can get full credit.

Entre Lagos! Meaning "between lakes," it's the name of a town a little further south, but more importantly, a restaurant and chocolate shop here in Valdivia. Sam and I are fans of the "chocolate entrelagos," which has rasberry syrup, hot chocolate, and a massive amount of whipped cream.

 This weekend is the big excursion for all of the Middlebury in Chile students in a valley near Viña del Mar in the central region of Chile. We fly up tomorrow, and I promise there will be lots more pictures in my next post!
